5 Factor: Day 1

13Jul07

Yesterday was our first day on our new eating plan. I’ve decided to call it an eating plan, instead of a diet, because as I previously mentioned, “diet” sounds temporary, where eating plan is a more permanent change.

It went very well, although first days usually do. But it’s something I feel we can stick to. Here’s the breakdown:

~7:15 AM: Breakfast shake (we’ve actually been doing this for awhile, so it’s not new)
~11 AM: Morning Snack: Apples with a sour cream/cream cheese/cinnamon dip, quite good actually
~2:30 PM: Lunch: Ham, Lettuce, Tomatoes, cream cheese spread in a pita, also very good
~6 PM: Evening Snack: Strawberry/Oat bars with a yogurt dip, a little spongy, not sure if that’s because I didn’t cook them right, or it’s just the way they are
~9 PM: Dinner: “Pizza” consisting of a tortilla wrap, a little sauce, feta cheese, and spinach

Workout consisted of:

5 minutes of warmup cardio. I used the Treadclimber on 3.2 mph. I haven’t really used it before, other than a couple little try outs. It’s much harder than it looks. The most difficult part is making sure your steps are of equal force so the steps remain even. I had to really concentrate to try to keep them even, although they got out of whack a number of times and I had to slow down and sort of reset myself. I assume it will just get easier over time as I’m on it more.

10 reps of curls followed immediately by 10 step ups on each leg, times 5. I’m a guy so I’m probably supposed to be bragging about how much weight I can lift. Well I started at 15 pounds on each arm. I wanted to be sure that I could go the full 5 sets, which I was able to. I’ll probably up it to 20 next time and go from there. I know, it’s not a lot, but I’m happy just to be getting in shape again.

Following that was 3 sets of 30 reverse ball crunches. I barely got through these, but did finally make it all the way. Wow, do I need to get in shape.

Last was another 5 minutes of cardio. The goal through all this is to keep your heart rate in the “fat burning zone” which I think I did, although I didn’t stop and check, just sort of guessing based on the way I felt.

So it was a good first day all around, and I’m actually looking forward to the snack and lunch today, because they were quite good yesterday (having the same thing).

Of course, I just spilled half my tea all over my lap… wonderful.
